Following the uncertainty surrounding this year’s examination results, Repton School’s Upper Sixth and O Block pupils are thrilled to have achieved excellent grades in their hard-earned GCSEs and A Levels. The pupils received their impressive results in August, delighting their families and teaching staff at Derbyshire’s co-educational independent day and boarding school. Once again, Repton School has delivered outstanding exam grades, resulting in a wealth of prestigious university places, job offers, and apprenticeship positions.
Repton School’s 2020 A Level and GCSE Results
Out of the Upper Sixth’s A Level grades, 22.8% were A* and 54.8% were A*/A. As a result, every Oxbridge candidate has secured their highly deserved university place, and all pupils who had applied to study Medicine and Veterinary Science have also been accepted on to their courses. Meanwhile, three pupils will be relocating to America to pursue international sports scholarships.
Repton’s O Block pupils have also achieved considerable success, as proven by their exceptional GCSE results. 27% of the GCSEs were awarded a grade 9 and 70.5% were awarded a grade 7, 8, or 9.
‘We are extremely proud of all our Upper Sixth and O Block pupils,’ says Headmaster Mark Semmence. ‘They have displayed tremendous resilience, courage and positivity in the face of repeated challenges this year, and I would also like to thank the staff who have consistently supported and encouraged them through such a difficult period. These results are the culmination of two years of hard work and consistent endeavours from our A Level and GCSE candidates, and it is gratifying to see so many achieving the success they deserve. My warmest congratulations to them all and we wish them continued success as they move on to the next stage of their education.’
Exam Preparation During COVID-19
In the run-up to this year’s GCSEs and A Levels, Repton’s fast-moving approach was pivotal in ensuring that pupils didn’t miss out on vital exam and coursework preparation. Repton reviewed every pupil’s timetable and made adaptions so that teachers could deliver all lessons virtually with minimal disruption to pupil education. The arrangements for summer exams and grades changed constantly in the final months of the Repton GCSE and A Level courses. Repton was quick to ensure that courses were complete and revision materials were readily accessible online, but as the government’s position changed toward centre assessed grades and non-completion of courses, Repton was ready to change too. GCSE students then received online pre-A Level courses to make sure their summer’s education was not wasted but in fact enhanced. Likewise, the A Level students were provided with pre-University courses to ready them even more fully for their next steps.
Repton’s teachers took every measure to alter learning resources for digital lessons and provide feedback by offering video-call sessions and electronic marking. They have worked endlessly to deliver all lessons and prioritise pupils’ educations over all else, despite the difficult circumstances. Pupils continued to receive thorough tuition in all subject areas, even subjects that require physical practice. For example, sports pupils received videos of coaching tips from Repton’s professional sporting coaches and submitted their own films for technique critiques.
The stats echo Repton’s immense efforts during the lockdown. The school saw a 3000% increase in Microsoft Teams use in April alone, and the teaching staff created 585 Teams sites to serve their classes. Meanwhile, staff and pupils exchanged 3,400 messages in Microsoft Teams between January and March. Repton used virtual learning systems to monitor pupil engagement and check that all pupils remained active during timetabled study periods. The school also delivered a remote care programme, which teaching staff put together within a week. On top of this, Repton School was once again certificated as a Microsoft Showcase School this year for the fifth time, and six staff are newly accredited as Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts, offering leading edge educational technology use in the classroom.
