Not quite as many people turned up to this as we had hoped (Hereford's a very rural area, and I know at least a few people were actually snowed in), and as much as we might have liked to had there been more of us, we decided not to try to shut down the store. But it was still a pretty successful day.
A group of us put up a couple of placards outside the only Topshop in Hereford, and spent the day handing out flyers and talking to people. It's important to note that Hereford is a very small rural city (and pretty Conservative to boot), with little to no political activism, and not very much awareness either, so it felt like one of the most productive things we could do is try to simply make people aware. And the vast majority of people responded extremely positively. Many people who previously had little idea about the issues which we were talking about, and the alternative being presented to savage cuts, were extremely interested and supportive of what we had to say. One notable success was a woman who was given a flyer on approaching Topshop, promptly read it, turned around, and walked away having not entered, saying as she left "Well I'm never shopping there again." It was great.
Obviously picketing isn't the extent of what we would have liked to do, and it is a shame we couldn't perhaps disrupt the store a bit more. But at least on that, they employed two security staff (on double pay because of the apparent danger we might pose to them) for the whole day, and had several more staff, and significantly less customers, in store than would have been expected on the last saturday before christmas. The security guards were in fact lovely, both agency staff who thanked us for creating work for them leading up to christmas (better than the government's doing), and were extremely supportive of the cause. One of them even asked me for details of the national event, so I directed him towards the UK Uncut website.

It was a reasonably enjoyable, if cold day. I feel we registered a presence where normally there would be none, and we made a lot of people aware of the lies which are being perpetuated by our government that 'there is no other option'. I feel the action was a success, if only a moderate one.

And we managed to get an alright, if short article about it in the local press, which is nice.
